More Than Just a Vision Screening
A comprehensive eye exam at Wendell Eye Care is a complete evaluation of both your vision and your eye health. During your visit, one of our doctors will review your medical history, assess how well your eyes work together, and examine the internal and external structures of each eye for any early signs of disease.
Prescription Evaluation
We perform a full refraction to determine the right corrective lens prescription for your needs at every distance, whether you are reading, driving, or working at a screen.
Ocular Health Assessment
Our doctors examine the external and internal structures of both eyes at every visit to monitor your eye health over time and catch changes before they become problems.
Eye Dilation
Most comprehensive exams include dilation, which gives our doctors a detailed view of your retina, optic nerve, and other internal structures that are not visible otherwise.
Optomap Retinal Imaging
For patients who prefer to avoid dilation or want additional detail, we offer Optomap imaging as an alternative or a complement. This technology captures an ultra-wide view of up to 80% of your retina in a single image.
Disease Screening
Each exam includes evaluation for early indicators of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease. Many of these conditions develop silently, and early detection is the most important factor in protecting your long-term vision.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, or another systemic condition, your eyes need more than a standard vision check. These conditions can cause changes inside the eye that progress without warning.
Our doctors perform dilated medical eye exams to look for early signs of diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, and other complications. Findings are communicated clearly so you and your primary care provider can stay on the same page about your overall health.

Common Questions About Eye Exams
Most adults benefit from an annual eye exam, even if their vision seems unchanged. Patients with health conditions such as diabetes, a history of eye disease, or a strong family history of ocular conditions may need to be seen more frequently. Our doctors will let you know what schedule makes sense for you.
A vision screening, like those done at a school or a DMV, checks basic distance acuity but does not evaluate eye health. A comprehensive eye examination includes a full assessment of both your vision and the internal and external health of your eyes, giving a much more complete picture.
Dilation is recommended as part of most comprehensive exams because it allows our doctors to see structures at the back of the eye in full detail. If you prefer not to dilate, we can discuss Optomap imaging as an alternative. Our doctors will always explain your options.
Plan for approximately one hour. If dilation is included, you may want to allow a little extra time for your eyes to recover before driving, as your near vision may be temporarily blurred.
